The  Beaver Scouts  are the junior sections of our Association and range from 6 - 8 years of age. Their programme is designed to meet the needs of young people of this age group. The emphasis is on meeting and interacting with people of their own age in a programme based around fun and discovery.

The motto of Beavering is `Sharing' and this is reflected in the programme where the young person learns to share through co-operation, teamwork and effort. Therefore Beavering is designed on a positive group basis.

Some of the activities enjoyed at Beaver meetings include: active and quite games, stories, creative crafts, singing, nature study, etc. Once a month, a Beaver Colony may have a special event or activity. This could be hikes, parties, visits, picnics, etc.

The two Beaver Colonies in St. Oliver's Scout Group (3rd and 4th Louth) reflect the aims of Beavering and encourage our young children to work as part of a team and to interact with each other. We work around an active programme, centred in the community and surrounding areas. Many of our visits include trips to our local fire station, ambulance station, garda station, etc, where the emphasis is on all people working together as part of a team. Along with our educational trips, we also have many social trips where we join up with other Beaver colonies from the Region.

Beavers work on a 2 year programme, meeting once a week, to achieve eight of what we call "paw badges", similar to merit badges. The badges are displayed on the right sleeve of the Beaver jumper. Each paw badge achieved is recognised as progression in their individual development, whilst also gaining the skills of being able to work as part of a team. There are many ways of achieving paw badges, i.e., fun, games, interaction with other local groups, etc. We are not an extension of school and we do not operate in a school environment.

This year 2003 being the year of the disabled our Beavers, as part of a large team, organised a disability awareness day. This involved a fun day including games, face painting, cooking, etc between our Beavers and members of our community with special needs.

The Beaver programme is tailor made to suit the mental and social development of 6 to 8 year olds.
